Private Water Systems
The Clermont County General Health District has been involved in private water system installations for more than 15 years. In Clermont County there is rarely a need for a private water system since public water is widely available. Homeowners typically connect to the public water system and have no need for their own private water system.
Private water systems usually consist of a well or cistern but
ponds and springs can also be used as private water supply systems and any of
them can carry contaminants. Due to the potential for homeowners and
their families to become sick from improperly treated private water supplies,
the Health District issues
permits and inspects private water systems during construction to ensure
proper installation. It is the Health Districts responsibility to
work with homeowners to be sure their system is sited appropriately and has all
the components to provide safe drinking water.
If you are planning on building in an area without public water you will need
to come into the Health District and submit an application for a private water
system. You will need to submit a copy of your site plan showing the
proposed home and the area for the proposed private water system. When you
submit the application for the private water system please have your installer
information ready so we can verify that an Ohio Department of Health registered
contractor will be doing the work for you and their information can be included
on your application.
A very important part of the private water system installation is the pump
completion form which is filled out by the installer. If this form is not
submitted and/or a passing water sample is not collected, occupancy of the home
cannot be granted. Please be sure both these steps are completed as soon as
possible during the construction of your private water system so the move into
your new home is not delayed.
