Bureau for Children with Medial Handicaps

The Bureau for Children with Medial Handicaps

Bureau for Children with Medical Handicaps (BCMH) is a healthcare program offered by the Ohio Department of Health that provides diagnostic and treatment programs that link families with providers and may help pay for some of the medical services of eligible children.

To be eligible for BCMH a child must:

  • Be under the age of 21 years
  • Be an Ohio resident
  • Be under the care of a BCMH approved physician
  • Have a possible medical handicap (diagnostic program)
  • Have an eligible medical handicap (treatment program)
  • Have a financially eligible family (treatment program only)

Diagnostic Program

The purpose of the BCMH diagnostic program is to rule out or diagnose a medically handicapping condition and to help develop a plan of treatment.  Services include office visits to BCMH approved physicians as well as diagnostic tests and Public Health Nurse Services.  There are no financial qualifications required for this program

Treatment Program

The purpose of the BCMH treatment program is to provide ongoing treatment services for medically and financially eligible children.  Services include  office visits to BCMH approved physicians, prescription medications, therapy, hearing aides, surgery, medical equipment and Public Health Nurse Services.

Public Health Nurse Services

Public Health Nurse Services are available to families interested in enrolling in BCMH, as well as all families enrolled in any BCMH program.  Services include health education, referrals to other agencies/services and home visits.  In addition Nurses help families understand their child's plan of treatment and explain the BCMH program, letter or approval.
